North is up in this image. The main object (outlined in the
blue OIII emission shell) is the supernova remnant - SNR G065.3+05.7. The
supernova event took place about 20,000 years ago (from our Earth's timeline).
The shell distance is about 3,700 light years - the light took that long
to first reach Earth. This SNR was first identified in 1977 through
optical observation - particularly OIII emission in its
"shell". In 1979, radio frequency observations verified the
characteristics of an SNR and established characteristics such as size, age, and
distance.
Also in
this field are other objects of note. Sh2-91, Sh2 -94 and Sh2-96
are the brighter Ha regions within or line-of-sight of the SNR.
Dark nebulae are LDN 816, LDN 817, LDN 820, and LDN 821.
These objects and
some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated
image. Horizontal Full FOV is approximately
5.68 degrees. Full size image scale is about 3.30 arcsec/pix.
