Horsehead and Flame Nebulas in Orion

Scope: ST80  f/2.5 Location: Del Mar CA   1/2/2003  Camera: ToUcam SC3

Exposure: 8 x 150 sec  H-Alpha Filter exposures, 28x 4  sec exposures with IR block filter, 20 x 6 sec RGB exposures

Processing: Captured  and stacked in K3CCDTools  with HA,IR,R,G,B saved as FITs. HA and IR exposures were combined in Photoshop for  Luminance channel; Some HA exposure was mixed in with the Red channel. LRGB masters were co- registered  in Astroart. Some Lowpass filtering was applied followed by un-sharp mask on the Luminance frame.  LRGB combine was done in Photoshop using Luminance Layering . Ears were removed with Loreal; background was smoothed in SGBNR -  minor touch up in Photoshop.

This image was taken in my front yard in Del Mar there is a fair amount of light pollution here as was true for the close-ups below. The 10nm bandwith H-Alpha filter was able to pull some good contrast out of the sky glow.   Horizontal FOV is 80'

CLOSE UP OF HORSEHEAD NEBULA

Scope: C8  f/3.3 Location: Del Mar, CA   11/26/2003  Camera: ToUcam SC3

Exposure: 8 x 160  sec exposure with H-Alpha filter and 16 x 16 sec exposure with IR block filter for Luminance .  16 x 16 sec RGB Exposures

Some Lowpass filtering was applied followed by un-sharp mask on the Luminance frame.  LRGB combine was done in Photoshop using Luminance Layering . Ears were removed with Loreal; background was smoothed in SGBNR as saved as TIF. The result TIF had minor touch up in Photoshop.

This image was taken the same night as the Horsehead close up above. Exposures and processing were nearly identical. The blue glow on the lower right of the image is the light from the belt star Alnitak which is just off the edge.  Horizontal FOV is 23'
